Metroplex Arnis Players Alliance

In the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex we have a number of Filipino Martial Arts instructors. But not all of us know each other well, we are all scattered about, and we are all small with not too many students. Most martial arts schools are kid-focused, competition-focused, or fitness focused. While FMA can meet any of those goals it is much more about adult self-defense and mastery of weaponry; parents generally don't want their kids playing with sticks and knives. So there is a long history (especially with Modern Arnis) of seminar based FMA training marketing to martial artists of other styles and encouraging cross-training.

About March of 2014 I was contacted by Kevin Bradbury, one of Guro Mark Lynn's assistent instructors. I had met Mark many years ago via an eskrima discussion digest online, then attending a 2-day GM Ernesto Presas seminar he co-hosted, and I think one other little Saturday seminar. We've been in occasional contact over time but not ever gotten our classes together before to cross train. Anyhow, Mark and Guro Abel Martinez had been discussing doing some cross training and we three started making some plans.

Mark, Able, and I are all strong believers in cross-training. We all teach Arnis several times a week, but each of us has had multiple Arnis teachers plus many years of experience with other martial arts styles. We all share a bond in having trained with Prof. Remy Presas, the creator of Modern Arnis. We believe that there is great benefit in seeing what others are doing to finding out what works for you. Our common bond is FMA, but we want to learn from, connect, train with, and reach out to martial artists of all styles and systems. Any martial art at some point becomes an individual martial art where you have made techniques your own regardless of who invented it or where it came from.

Thus the creation of the Metrplex Arnis Players Alliance (MAPA). Our intent is to set up cross training events between FMA martial arts who are open minded to learn and work with each other. We will keep the seminar costs as nominal as possible; cheaper than practically any other classes we teach, just enough to cover the costs of the facility and gas costs of the instructors. The intent is to share FMA knowledge with as many people as possible.

The first event was held May 3rd, 2014 at Mark's location of the Roanoke Rec. Center for my arnis students. Unfortunately I had an unforeseen family conflict and wasn't able to teach as planned, but Guro John Bain stepped in, joined us, and covered nicely. It was very successful with over 20 people in attendence.

MAPA #2 was held Aug 2nd, 2014 at my place at Jerome's Gym in Richardson, with nearly 30 people in attendence.

MAPA #3 was held Nov 8th, 2014 at the River of Life Church in Plano, John Bain's location. We added two new teachers, Andrea Tabei and Darren Dailey.

MAPA #4 was held Jan 31st, 2015 at the Okinawin Karate Club in Dallas, Bruce Jenkins location. Bruce and Mike Pana were two new teachers for us.

MAPA #5 was held May 2nd, 2015 at Life Community Church in Haslet church outdoors, with 6 instructors! 3 new ones of Jason Guiterrez, Michael Hume, and Earl Tullis, plus old ones Mark, Abel, and John.

MAPA #6 was held Aug 29th, 2015 at the Oates Drive Baptist Church in Mesquite, with Darren, David, Bruce, and Jason teaching.

MAPA #7 will be Nov 7th, 2015 at in North Richland Hills, with Mark, Abel, David, and Jason teaching.

We now have had 11 different instructors, typically with 3 or 4 teaching at each MAPA. We would love to include any additional Metroplex instructors who are teaching FMA. We are happy to trade around who teaches and at what location. If you've got something to share, we'd love to see it!

We now have MAPA t-shirts available for sale at the Cafe Press Beck Martial Arts store!
